Unlike other fire equipment - use only lamp oil and apply with a syringe very carefully. You must only get the oil on the kevlar, not on the silicone or the felt. 5 minutes before you light the hat, you need to apply water to the top and sides of the hat.

Lamp oil sets on fire very slowly so very carefully put a few drops of lighter fuel on the kevlar and give yourself a minute to make sure the hat is burning evenly.
